Writing
about writing
OK, I have been asked to think about not only
how I write, but the what and the where. I write in a variety of places for a
variety of reasons - some good, some bad. I write to escape; escape the mind-numbing tedium of a four hour train journey, or a transatlantic flight, or
insomnia, or worries about my life, or even the pains and spasms that wrack my
body. The question of where do I write
is best answered as everywhere.
Cafes, planes, trains, automobiles,
libraries, park benches, military training facilities, bars and even
occasionally home. I write about many things; what I see, what I feel and what
I have seen. I draw on my past, my experiences to build a truth for my
characters. Everything I do, everything I write has something of myself inside. Everything I have produced opens myself to others in a truly terrifying way,
offering a portion of my heart, my soul to the world outside.
No matter where I am, there are always
certain things that are a given when I write. There’s always a net connection
even if I have to tether my phone to the laptop. I always have a drink nearby
and I’m always curled into myself. I bounce ideas off my editors, chat, and
browse the net all as not just an escape but to allow me to pause, to mull
things over and to concentrate on writing what’s best for the time.
The drink
is as much to play with as it is for the fluids. I have this really bad habit
of chewing bottle caps. I generally have something snacky because I will
either get lost in my work and just write through meals or I snack because I’m
bored. Depending on my mood I either chain vape, do lines of snuff or pack
pipes and take my laptop with me to find somewhere to muse contemplate and
smoke. When writing from my bed it usually ends up with me dog tired and just
dropping off with my netbook on my chest, waking up with the screen in front of
my eyes, warm and cozy with the footmarks from the machine imprinted in my
skin.
So yeah basically that’s a short trip into
the hows and a touching on the why of my writing, just about ready to pop on
the next stop of the blog tour so. . .
See y’all next time. Same blogtime probably
a different blogstation.
